John Paul Mason -
Founder and Breathwork Facilitator
In 2008 I found myself out of work, out of relationship and struggling to find my place in the world. I had recently sold out of the business I had set up seven years previously and had just walked away from yet another important relationship in my life. For the first time in my life, I realised that something had to change. I was repeating the same patterns of behaviour over and over again and it was having a significant impact on my life. Over the next few years I explored a variety of different healing modalities and took part in numerous courses as I searched for a solution to the challenges I was facing. On the surface, on one hand I was looking for new work but fundamentally, I was looking for a new way of being in the world. My explorations took me through Shamanism, Coaching, Group Analysis, Family Constellations work and finally to Rebirthing Breathwork, all the while supported by a long term therapist and bodyworker. Through this work I gradually uncovered the experience of sexual abuse, which until this time had been completely out of view in my psyche. A key that helped me unlock this experience was my immersion into Rebirthing Breathwork and as I completed my training and gradually created a new life for myself, I healed the experience of abuse that I had been carrying since childhood.
What became apparent to me during this process was that the process of 'healing' requires something of us. We do not get something for nothing when change is called for. For me there was a degree of 'shaping up' required, specifically around the issue of truth in my life and my relationship to it. The spirit demands something of us. As I made progress in my life it seemed I was being asked to walk a tighter line when it came to my personal integrity. I can genuinely say that I am not the same person I was before encountering breath work and that it is called Rebirthing for a reason - I feel like I was given a second chance at life and for that I am immensely grateful. It enabled me to move beyond the patterns of self sabotage I was constantly repeating to consciously create what I wanted in my life. Most importantly for me, it gave me back my sense of connection to God/Spirit/Life.
My principal aim in founding Breathing Journeys is to provide a simple, accessible and directly applicable format for both healing and spiritual growth that has practical benefit and relevance to people’s daily lives. One of my trainer termed it the 'meditation for the west' - it suits our busier lives. For me, as a long term meditator there had always seemed to be a split between spiritual practice and the reality of everyday existence. Breathwork has enabled me to bridge that gap. There is no need to “go on retreat” – my everyday life is where it all happens.
Breathing Journeys is the culmination of 5 years of intense spiritual exploration. It is my deepest heartfelt wish that those who partake in this work find answers to the questions that drive them deeper into life.
